Going on an End-of-Summer Camping Trip

All summer, you’ve probably been enjoying good times around your backyard fire pit, taking advantage of the lazy Atlanta summer days to make the most of your time with friends and family. However, as the sun starts going down sooner and Labor Day looms only a few weeks away, you might be thinking about going on an end-of-summer camping trip. After all, as we discussed in an earlier post, it’s easy to get nostalgic about your Boy Scout days or family camping trips when you were young.

If you’ve decided to embark on an end-of-summer camping trip, you definitely shouldn’t head into the wilderness empty-handed. Especially when you’re roughing it in the woods, having the right supplies can mean the difference between a smooth, fun-filled experience and a total catastrophe. Here are a few tips to follow as you get ready for your end-of-summer camping trip:

Tip #1: Bring your kiln-dried firewood with you.

When you go camping, you might be able to buy firewood from the campground or a nearby store. Back in the day, you might even have considered yourself lucky if the person at the campsite before you left some of their unused store-bought firewood behind. However, if you choose this firewood, you’re bound to have a less pleasant fireside experience--especially if you’re accustomed to backyard fire pit experiences with firewood for sale. Therefore, you should definitely bring kiln-dried firewood along with you for your campfire. The pleasant aroma of your kiln-dried oak or hickory will no doubt be the envy of the entire campground, and you can enjoy a brighter, warmer, longer-lasting campfire.

One thing you might want to be careful about when you’re traveling with your kiln-dried firewood is keeping it free from the threat of insects or mold. Kiln-dried firewood is guaranteed pest- and mold-free when it arrives at your door, so if your camping destination is a short drive from your home, you probably don’t have a lot to worry about. However, if you’re going on a longer trip or you’re carrying your wood in the back of an open pickup truck, you need to make sure that the firewood is well-protected from moisture and doesn’t come into contact with dirt and debris from the outdoors. That way, when you arrive at your campsite, you won’t be surprised and disappointed to find yourself with a batch of contaminated kiln-dried firewood.

Tip #2: Make sure you have the right size and amount of kiln-dried firewood.

The size and amount of kiln-dried firewood you need to bring with you will inevitably depend on a variety of factors, including the length of your trip and how you’re planning to spend your time. If you’re going to be spending multiple nights camping, you’ll want to make sure you have enough firewood packed for every evening. Also, if you or a family member is planning to spend the day relaxing at the campsite, just playing cards or reading a book under the open summer sky, you may want to consider getting oversized firewood or uncut rounds, so you can keep the fire burning all day. A daytime fire can add to the rustic atmosphere of your low-key day by the tent, allowing you to make the most of the last lazy days of the summer season.

Tip #3: Bring along some kind of fire starter.

A fire starters is notoriously hard to find in the wilderness, especially if you’re not keen to pour kerosene all of your fire to get it to burn. And after going through all the trouble of planning for an end-of-summer camping trip, you don’t want to end up spending your evening crouching over a stubborn campfire, frustrated as you try to use crumpled pieces of newspaper to get the flame to take to the wood. Therefore, when you’re packing for your trip, be sure to bring along kiln-dried kindling. To be on the safe side, you might also want to pack all natural heart pine, which can further ease your fire starting process.

Tip #4: Pack roasting forks for your fireside eats.

Choose Kiln-Dried Cooking Wood

You probably remember from your younger years that finding a good stick for roasting hot dogs or s’mores around your campsite can be difficult, if not impossible. As a result, you may end up with a curved stick that is infuriatingly difficult to use and only ends up producing sub-par fireside eats--that is, marshmallows and hot dogs that are blackened on one side, and underdone on the other. In order to avoid this problem, make sure you add roasting forks to your packing list. Not only are they perfectly straight, which allows you to cook your food evenly, but they also have multiple prongs, which means can roast four marshmallows or two wieners at a time--maximizing your total output so that you and your family won’t go hungry.
