Choose Kiln-Dried Firewood

Finding the Right Size For Your Firewood Order

In an earlier post, we talked about the different sizes that are available--regular-sized kiln-dried firewood (and a slightly larger next-size up), oversized kiln-dried firewood, and uncut rounds. In this post, we’re going to talk about a related (but no less important issue): the size of your actual firewood order. When you’re determining the size of your order, one of the most crucial things to consider is the amount of space you have available.

If you’ve been ordering a lot of firewood over the course of the summer for your fireside gatherings, your stash might be piling up. For instance, you might have your go-to stack of kiln-dried oak on hand, but you might also have leftover firewood for cooking from a grillfest earlier in the summer. You may also have oversized firewood or even a few uncut rounds in your stash from special events when you needed your fire to burn extra long. All of those take up space, no matter where you’re storing your firewood--in a firewood rack, your basement, your garage, or a stack in your backyard or on your patio--so as the summer wears on, you have to start paying closer attention to your order size.

Ultimately, your primary aim should be to try to strike a balance. You don’t want to run out of firewood on the nights when you need it, but you also don’t want to order so much firewood that it won’t fit in your storage space. Therefore, you need to be fully aware of the sizing of the different firewood order options. Read on for key information that can help you make decisions about how much firewood you have the space to order for the remaining months of this summer.

Size Expectations for Your Firewood Order

Before you make an order of firewood, it’s important to know exactly how much you’ll be getting. That way, when your delivery arrives, there’s no chance that you’ll end up with more than you expect--or that the order will be too small to get you through the fireside gatherings you’re planning for the rest of the summer. Here are the order sizes you can expect for some of the different types of firewood:

  • Regular-sized kiln-dried firewood (oak, hickory, or cherry). For these go-to types of firewood for sale, the order sizing is pretty simple: A regular order will fill a 4-foot by 4-foot firewood rack, and a half order will fill a 2-foot by 4-foot rack.
  • Oversized kiln-dried firewood (oak or hickory). Don’t let the term “oversized” fool you. Just like with regular-sized kiln dried firewood, a regular order will fill a 4-foot by 4-foot rack, and a half order will fill a 2-foot by 4-foot rack.
  • Uncut rounds (oak). Again, the fact that uncut rounds have a larger diameter than regular-sized and oversized firewood (between 4 and 8 inches) doesn’t impact the amount of space a single order will take up--that is, one regular order will fill your 4-foot by 4-foot rack. Because the specific uses of uncut rounds vary widely, you have more choices when it comes to your order size. Not only can you get a half order (which will fill a 2-foot by 4-foot rack), but you can also get a quarter order (which will fill a 2-foot by 2-foot rack). You even have the option of getting a single uncut round--that is, one log of oak that is 24 inches long and 4 to 8 inches in diameter.

Measuring Firewood Orders in Terms of Face Cords

If you’re a long-time fire pit enthusiast, you might be more familiar with measuring firewood volume in terms of face cords. If you’re trying to make the calculation, one order of firewood is equivalent to half of a face cord (which comes out to about 21 and 1/3 cubic feet). Again, when stacked, the resulting pile of firewood is generally about 4 feet long by 4 feet wide, but you always have the freedom to alter the dimensions, depending on the specifications of the space in which you are storing the firewood.

Just Enough Firewood for a Single Night

Even if you’re a committed fire pit enthusiast, there still might be times when you only have one fireside gathering on the near horizon, and you just don’t want to have to worry about long-term storage. For those situations, your best option is a firewood box. Each box contains just enough firewood to get you through a single night--about 2.45 cubic feet--plus a layer of kindling and some extra fire starters so you don’t have to worry about spending too much time trying to get the flame to take. With a firewood box, you can choose from hickory, oak, cherry, chiminea, or pecan firewood, so it’s a great option whether you’re planning to sit around the fire and enjoy the aroma, or whether you’re specifically looking to cook up some delicious summer eats with an ideal cooking wood.
