While most people think of time by the fire as a winter activity, the summer bonfire is also a great way to make memories!

Think about it – remember the bonfires at summer camp? Or how does drying off by the fire on a cool summer night sound after a day in the pool? And what about making s’mores? Those are a year-round treat!

The only problem is, it becomes much harder to source good firewood during the summer. Grocery stores stop carrying it, local suppliers run out of dry wood, and sometimes you don’t want an entire truck load of wood anyway.

Fortunately, we have the solution! Here at Cutting Edge Firewood, we carry stock of firewood year-round and can ship or deliver wood directly to your home. It’s never been easier to source quality firewood, so there is no excuse for not enjoying an outdoor fire with friends or family this summer!

You can order firewood now, or read on to learn more about what makes Cutting Edge Firewood the best firewood available. Period.

Why you should enjoy a fire during the summer

Enjoying a good fire should not be restricted to nights when the temperature drops below freezing. In fact, you might be surprised by how much you enjoy a bonfire at night when the temperature is in the 70s or 80s.

What is the Best-Smelling firewood?

Here are a few benefits to spending time around the fire during the summer:

  • Watching a fire is like watching a sunset. It’s a beautiful thing!
  • Research has proven that watching a fire can lower your blood pressure and reduce anxiety.
  • The fire provides a great opportunity to disconnect from technology and, instead, connect with those around you.
  • S’mores taste just as good in the summer, and in fact, National S’mores day is on August 10!
  • If you spend time in the pool at night, having a fire nearby is a great way to get warm and dry off when the swimming is done.
  • It brings back memories of summer camps from when you were young.
  • It creates the perfect space for singing (or listening to) campfire songs
  • You can go beyond s’mores and cook your entire meal over the fire.

Those are just a few benefits to building a fire during the summer, you’ll discover more once you actually experience it for yourself!

Which species of wood is best for a bonfire?

Lots of people ask us which type of wood is best for an outdoor bonfire.

First, you want to make sure you’re using some quality kiln dried firewood. This will help ensure everyone has a great experience because it will be easier to light, smoke less, and have a better aroma. Seasoned firewood brings a host of problems and we recommend avoiding it.

Second, you want to burn hardwoods instead of softwoods like pine. Softwoods burn very quickly and create more dark smoke that can make you feel like you’re choking.

We offer three primary hardwoods: oak, hickory, and cherry. Each is great for bonfires and has it’s own unique properties.

Variety of Wood Species

Cherry, for instance, has a sweet aroma and creates the least heat. If it’s a warm summer night, that cooler fire might be perfect!

Hickory, on the other hand, creates a classic wood fire aroma, lasts the longest, and creates the most heat. If you want to experience the best burning wood available, the hickory is your best choice.

Oak is a great all-arounder. It burns hotter than cherry but cooler than hickory. It has a subtle aroma and can burn for a long time. It’s a popular choice for outdoor fire pits everywhere!

What’s in the Box of Firewood?

While you may want to enjoy a fire this weekend, you may not need to fill an entire rack. If you’re after a smaller amount of firewood, but still want a great experience, then our boxes are a great choice.

The Best Firewood Available- Every Time
May 22, 2020

When we started Cutting Edge Firewood, one of the primary goals was to provide the best firewood available. Not just the best in the neighborhood or the best in Georgia, we wanted to deliver the best firewood in the world.

Most people tend to think “firewood’s just firewood,” but when they experience their first Cutting Edge Fire, they immediately recognize the difference. Our firewood is easier to light, burns brighter and hotter, creates less smoke, and gives off an incredible aroma.

Saying all firewood is the same is kind of like saying all water is the same. But which would you rather drink? Something from a river that has dirt and sediments floating inside? Plus things you can’t see? Or would you rather drink water that has gone through a filtration process that guarantees it is completely clean and safe?

In the same way, our firewood goes through a rigorous drying process that leaves it dry and completely free from mold, bugs, or pests. Our process ensures the wood will always provide a better fireside experience.

In this article, we’ll explore some of the science behind our process and explain why it makes for such incredible firewood.

What is Kiln Dried Firewood?

The dryer the firewood, the better it will burn. It should surprise no one that water in your wood will work against your fire.

There are two common drying processes used today. The first and most common process is seasoning firewood. This wood has been cut and (hopefully) stacked so that it can air dry over the course of months or years. Freshly cut wood (aka green wood) has a moisture content of 50%, and seasoned firewood can drop down to 20-30%. This lower moisture content will help the firewood burn, but it’s not enough to provide a great experience. The other problem with seasoned firewood is that, as it sits out drying, it begins to decay, invite bugs in, and start growing mold and fungus.

The kiln drying process, however, is a much quicker drying method. Wood is placed into an oven (or kiln) and dried over the course of hours. This process should also kill any bugs, mold, or fungus. Depending on how long your firewood spends in the kiln, it’s moisture level can drop as low as 5-10%, which is going to provide a much better fireside experience.

Guide to Different Cuts Firewood

Because kiln dried firewood is so much better, we never provide “seasoned firewood” at Cutting Edge, we only provide kiln dried wood.

Not All Kiln Dried Firewood is the Same

When it comes to kiln dried firewood, you need to understand that there is a wide range of quality factors. Although there are many firewood suppliers claiming to provide kiln dried firewood, it’s important to understand the difference between our process and their processes.

For instance, if you purchase firewood from your local grocery store or hardware store, odds are you will see a large “kiln dried firewood” label on the bag. In fine print, you’ll see that it was only kiln dried for 75 minutes at 160 degrees. This is the bare minimum for killing bugs, but will not really make the firewood much better.

Our drying process, however, is significantly more rigorous. All of our firewood spends 48 hours in the kiln at 250 degrees! This ensures that the wood is consistently dry and ready to burn. This article from the USDA shows that the more time firewood spends in the kiln, and the hotter the temperature, the dryer the wood will be.

If you’ve ever bought a bag from the store and had a bad experience, now you know why! Their kiln drying process is the bare minimum, and so you get stuck with the bare minimum result. We put our wood through the most rigorous drying process in the industry, and so we are able to produce the best firewood available.

Let’s talk about density

Many people think that kiln dried firewood will burn more quickly because it is more dry.

It will certainly catch on fire and provide heat more quickly, but if your firewood is really dense then it will burn for a long time, even if the wood is kiln dried. The physics on this is simple: the more dense the wood, the more there is to burn.

How does Cutting Edge Firewood keep our firewood so dense?

When you cut logs of firewood, they immediately start to decay. The moisture in the wood attracts bugs and starts the natural process of decomposition. This is why a seasoned log that has been sitting outside for years can be broken almost as easily as paper.

Many places that sell kiln dried firewood will chop their wood and then let it sit outside for 6-12 months. This allows the wood to dry most of the way, and then they can finish the job with their kiln. Their main goal is to spend less money heating a kiln – by starting with wood that is already at 20-30% moisture they don’t need to kiln dry for nearly as long. Unfortunately, the density of the wood will have taken a big hit while sitting out air drying for 6-12 months. This firewood will weigh less than it should and simply will not burn for as long.

Cutting Edge Firewood, on the other hand, places firewood into our kiln facilities within a week of being cut down. This means that all of our firewood is still extremely dense and heavy. We give you the best of both worlds – dry firewood that is easy to light, and dense firewood that can burn all night.

Since Cutting Edge Firewood is so dry and does not contain any bugs, mold, or fungus, it can resist the decomposing process for years on end when you store it somewhere dry like your garage or screened in porch.

Hand Selection

Our warehouse receives truck loads of firewood from our two kiln drying facilities. Although every piece spends 48 hours in the 250 degree kiln, we still hand select each piece of wood before stacking it into one of our firewood racks or firewood boxes.

Pecan Cooking Wood Rack

This process allows us to ensure every piece of firewood is dry, cut to the right length, and will display beautifully on your rack before you decide to start a fire. We firmly believe in our commitment to providing the best customer service and the best firewood available, and we seek to demonstrate it at every step of the way.

Cutting Edge Firewood – Perfect for any occasion

Because we make the best firewood available, it’s the perfect fuel source for any fire. It doesn’t matter if you’re starting a fire inside or outside, if you want to relax over the fire or cook over it. All of our firewood goes through the exact same rigorous process and will be dry, dense, clean, and bug free.

If you decide to try cooking with Cutting Edge, you will not be disappointed. Our cooking wood provides a superior aroma and flavor to any meal. We offer cooking chunks (2-4″), splits (8″), and cooking wood logs (16″). In each of those shapes, we offer a variety of species including apple, cherry, pecan, hickory, oak, and maple.

Cooking Wood for Big Green Egg and Kamado Joe

Our wood is never treated with chemicals to help it dry or to kill bugs – everything is all natural. You can feel safe when you choose to use our products, and you’ll never need to deal with the musty flavor that comes form wet wood or the chemically flavor from lighter fluid.

Where to find Custom Length Firewood
March 10, 2020

We work with many customers who are looking for custom length firewood. They may have a uniquely shaped fireplace or want to stack wood in a specific bookshelf. Maybe they need it for their grill or they have specific decorating goals.

Whatever the case, if you need custom length firewood then you have come to the right place. Cutting Edge Firewood offers the widest variety of standard lengths of firewood, plus we can cut firewood to specific dimensions to meet your needs.

In this article, we’ll discuss the dimensions of standard firewood plus considerations for you if you want a more unique length of firewood.

What are the standard lengths of firewood?

Most firewood that is for sale, including the kind you find at a grocery store or local supplier, is typically about 16″ in length. Depending on the supplier, however, those dimensions could be off by 1-2 inches. Here at Cutting Edge, we offer this 16″ length of firewood and call it our standard cut. This fits most fireplaces just fine, but it’s not for everyone.

What if you have an extremely large fireplace? What if you have an extremely small fireplace? What if you want to stack the firewood into a bookshelf that is only 14″ deep?

If you have a very small fireplace, wood stove, or chiminea then we recommend our chiminea cut firewood. This is a special product where all the pieces are shorter, between 4″ and 12″ in length. We use the same amazing quality firewood that you would expect from Cutting Edge, but cut it into smaller pieces. It’s still easy to light, burns hot and bright, and creates less smoke. It just does it with a cut that is small enough.

If you have a larger fireplace or fire pit, then we also have you covered. We offer both 24″ length firewood and 30″ length firewood. This firewood looks amazing in oversized fireplaces and gives an impressive look to your room decor. You can order firewood from us today – we ship nationwide and have an incredible local delivery service.

This is the kind of customer service you can only find at Cutting Edge Firewood. We love great fires and that starts with unmatched firewood and unparalleled customer service.

The longest piece of custom length firewood we can offer is 30″. If you need firewood longer than that, then we are very impressed with the size of your fireplace and would love to hear about it!

If you need firewood cut to a specific length, then please contact us and let us know the dimensions you’re looking for.

How to determine the right dimensions

If you want to order custom length firewood, there are a few things to consider.

First, you need to know the length of the firewood you want to order. If you’re looking to stack the firewood in a specific place, then how long does the firewood need to be? Do you want the firewood to stick out? Do you want it set back some? Or would you like it flush with the edge of the bookshelf or rack or whatever it is you’re filling?

Dimensions for custom length firewood

We also need to know how much firewood you need. It’s not enough to know the length of the firewood, we need to know how high and how wide the space you want to fill is. For instance, if you have a cut out inside a brick wall, then we need to know how wide and tall it is so we can calculate how many pieces of firewood you will need.

Lastly, you need to consider how thick you want each piece of wood. Do you want the large uncut round pieces? Or would you prefer some thin, pizza cut pieces of firewood? Or do you simply want to stick with the standard size? Depending on the thickness of your wood, you can create a unique look and feel. Each unique cut of firewood also provides a different burning experience, with larger pieces lasting longer but needing more heat to light.

Other Considerations for Decorating with Firewood

If you want a custom length firewood for decorative purposes, then it is also important to consider the method used to dry your firewood.

Seasoned firewood, for instance, is not safe to store inside. It likely has bugs, mold, and fungus and is not ideal for decorations. It usually has a nasty odor as well, which you don’t want in your home!

This is one of the many reasons we only provide ultra kiln dried firewood.  We place every piece of firewood through a  kiln that is 250 degrees for 48 hours. This drastically reduces the moisture content, providing a better fireside experience in every way. It also means there are no bugs, mold, or fungus inside our wood. It’s clean!

Make sure you choose a wood that is safe to store inside, you don’t want to regret decorating your home with  the wrong type of firewood. Choose Cutting Edge Firewood!

Fire that stays lit
March 4, 2020

Here at Cutting Edge Firewood, it’s no secret that we love a great fire. Something magical happens when we gather around the fireplace or fire pit and watch the flames dance. Fire has been a gathering place for thousands of years, so not only does it help us connect with those around us today, but it also helps connect us with our past.

But there is only one problem, what if you’ve gotten everyone together and your fire won’t stay lit?! What if you keep throwing matches and newspaper and twigs and get nothing but smoke and dying flames? How is it that a good flame can go bad when you add certain pieces of wood?

We have good news – You have come to the right place! We love fires and we know fires. In this article, we’ll explain how to maintain a great fire and ensure it stays lit the entire time. We highly recommend our video on maintaining a great fire below, or you can read on for more directions if that is your preference.

3 Things Every Good Fire Needs

If you want to enjoy a great fire, there are 3 elements that must be present to ensure your fire stays lit:

  1. Heat: There’s a reason you’ve never enjoyed a cold fire – there needs to be heat!
  2. Oxygen: Without air, your fire will be snuffed out
  3. Fuel: All that heat needs to burn something, and that something can be anything from (hopefully) firewood to (hopefully not) furniture

All three of these elements must be present. If your fire won’t stay lit, it’s probably because one of these three things is having trouble. As you might expect, all three of them affect one another, so it’s important to think about all them.

The Importance of Good Fuel Source

One of the most common challenges with starting a fire is having a bad fuel source. Firewood that is wet, decomposing, or moldy will never burn as well as kiln dried firewood. It makes sense when you think about it…

Water cools things down and reduces heat. There is a reason firefighters use it to put out fires! If you’re starting a fire with wet wood, it’s always going to be tough because the water will actively reduce the heat from the fire. Even if you place wet wood onto an existing fire, it is going to reduce the overall heat of the fire and could even put the fire out. If you want a great fire then, you should ensure you are only using dry wood.

Dry wood is also safer for your chimney. It reduces creosote build-up that can cause serious problems down the road. If you’re looking to warm your home, then again, dry firewood will burn hotter and create more heat!

Use hickory firewood to keep your fire lit

Many people use firewood that is “well-seasoned,” but one of the problems with seasoned firewood is that it is decomposing. This, by definition, means it will be less dense. Because the firewood is less dense, there is actually less fuel for the fire to burn away. If the seasoned wood is actually dry, it will be easier to light but it will burn more quickly.

Kiln Dried firewood is an awesome alternative to seasoned firewood. Not everyone follows the same kiln drying practices, however, so you have to be careful. Cutting Edge Firewood follows the most rigorous kiln drying standards. All of our wood is cooked at 250 degrees for 48 hours. This means it is incredibly dry and makes for an amazing fuel source.

Because we place freshly cut firewood into the kiln, it has not started decomposing. You know it will be dense and last for a longer amount of time. We also only use hardwoods like hickory firewood, which is more dense and will therefore burn for much longer than soft woods like pine.

How to Maintain Oxygen Flow

Wherever you build your fire, you’ll need good oxygen flow. In order to do this, you need to think about how you stack the firewood.

If you cover the flame with too much firewood too quickly, you can snuff it out because it won’t get enough oxygen. You also need to stack the logs in such a way that enables them to breathe. If the logs are stacked too tightly together, oxygen won’t flow between them and it will slow the burning process significantly.

Keep your fire lit with good oxygen flow

If you’re outside, then things like leaves may seem like an easy fire starter, but again they can quickly reduce or eliminate all oxygen flow. It’s best to avoid them unless you like lots of smoke!

It’s always a good idea to start with smaller pieces of wood. It’s easy for them to receive oxygen and start building heat, and then you can strategically stack or set larger pieces of wood on top to provide more fuel when required.

As you add firewood to the fire throughout the day or night, keep oxygen flow in mind. Don’t add too much wood at once or place them in the fire directly next to each other or they will struggle to burn properly. Always stack neatly, so that oxygen can flow but heat can still be shared.

Keep the Heat Alive

The final component is heat! Have you ever noticed what happens to a piece of firewood that falls away from the fire? It usually just stops burning, right?

That’s because the wood needs to be close to the heat source in order to burn. The further from the heat source, the cooler the air and the quicker your fire will go out.

Keep fire lit by keeping firewood together

As you set up the fire, it’s important to keep this balance in mind. While it’s important to maintain oxygen flow, you still want the wood to be close enough to share heat. One or Two inches of space is usually a pretty good balance – it allows both oxygen to flow and heat to be shared.

As the fire burns, you might need to use a designer fire iron to move pieces of firewood closer to the middle. Often times, the firewood burns away in the middle of the log, but the sides remain untouched. As the firewood collapses, take a moment to push pieces closer into the fire. This will extend the life of your fire and reduce the amount of wood you need to add.

Lastly, when it comes to heat, you really want a good coal bed. The coals are the best source of heat in the fire and will make it so much easier for the wood to stay hot and burning. If your fire won’t stay lit for very long, check it make sure you have enough wood at the bottom to create a good coal base.

Keep fire lit with an awesome coal base

Where to Get the Best Fuel Source?

When you want a great fire, finding an amazing fuel source can be one of the hardest parts. Fortunately, there is plenty of oxygen to go around and matches aren’t too hard to find when you want to create heat.

But finding good firewood can be a challenge, or at least, it used to be a challenge.

Thanks to Cutting Edge Firewood, obtaining great firewood is easier than ever before. Our firewood quality is unmatched – it is consistently drier and cleaner than any other firewood provider. August 28, 2019

There is something special about starting a fire with a single match. Not only does it make life easy, but it also tends to invoke a certain sense of pride.

On the flip side, it’s fairly infuriating when you go through dozens of matches or an entire supply of lighter fluid attempting to get a fire started. This process usually involves lots of smoke inhalation, frustration, and possibly a few four letter words (and unfortunately, we don’t mean “fire”).

But we’re here to help! Cutting Edge Firewood has mastered the art of starting a fire with a single match. Watch this short video to see our process, or scroll down for some written directions.

What you need:

In order to start a fire with a single match, you’ll need a few key supplies:

  • Dry Firewood: This is the most important part of a single match fire. Wet wood simply does not want to ignite. You can force it to light withenough heat, blowing, smoke, and persistence, but certainly not with a single match. This is one of the many reasons Cutting Edge Firewood is the best – we use the most rigorous drying process in the industry.everything that you need to start a fire
  • Fire Starter: There are a lot of different fire starters on the market, but basically you want something that will light and then stay lit for several minutes. Naturally, we recommend our excelsior fire starters because they are scent and chemical free. This makes them safer for both indoor fires and cooking fires. And of course, they are very easy to light and will last a long time.
  • Heart Pine: A nice way to complement your fire starter is with a piece of heart pine. Heart pine is derived from the heartwood of pine trees and burns readily even when wet, making it a prized natural fire starter. The pleasant aroma of pine will add a welcome addition to your fire. We don’t recommend using them with cooking wood, because heart pine does not add great flavor.
  • Kindling: Smaller pieces of wood ignite more easily than larger pieces. You can gather lots of small twigs from your yard, cut off smaller pieces from a log, or you can use the kindling we supply at Cutting Edge. Each of our kindling pieces are made with the same quality as our firewood and is easy to light. If you use our kindling, two pieces will be plenty. If you use other kindling, you’ll likely need many more pieces.
  • Matches: If you want to start a single match fire, then you’ll obviously need some matches!

Each of the items listed above are available from Cutting Edge Firewood. You can purchase them separately, or for extra convenience you can choose the complete fire starter package.

What you don’t need:

Many people are under the impression that a single match fire requires the following, but we’re here to tell you the truth. The following “fire starters” are not necessary and can negatively affect your fire starting experience.

  • Lighter Fluid: We’ve known friends who seem to think a good fire is one where you spray lighter fluid at the fire whenever the fire gets too low. The problem is, they’re burning fluid instead of wood. They’ve chosen to use wet wood and are trying to make up for it with lighter fluid. This adds unnecessary chemicals to your fire, does not smell good, requires more work, and creates additional danger.
  • Newspaper: Most people have used newspaper to start a fire before. It certainly ignites easily, but it does have several disadvantages. First, it cannot stay lit for very long and often burns out before the kindling ignites. Second, it doesn’t burn as hot as a good fire starter. Third, it creates lots of unnecessary ash that often floats up and out of the fire. Lastly, in today’s digital age it’s much harder to find newspaper! For a more reliable experience, choose an actual fire starter.
  • Gasoline: This is an absolute NO. Using gasoline is extremely dangerous. The fumes spread immediately and lighting it is explosive. We know people who tried to use gasoline and they ended in the hospital. If that’s not enough reason, gasoline isn’t even an effective fire starter because it burns so quickly. So once again, never use gasoline to start a fire.

Step-By-Step Guide to Starting a Fire with one Match

If you watched the video, you saw how easy it is to start a fire the Cutting Edge way. Remember to always keep safety in mind when you start a fire and choose an appropriate place to start one.

Here are step-by-step instructions for lighting a fire with a single match:

  1. Place the excelsior fire starter (or the fire starter of your choice) at the center of the where you want the fire. If using a fireplace grate, then place this below the grate.
  2. Strike your single match and light the fire starter.
  3. If you’re using heart pine, carefully rest a single heart pine piece on top of the lit fire starter. How to start a fire: adding heart pine
  4. Place a couple pieces of kindling directly above the heart pine in the shape of an X. Use additional kindling if required.
  5. As the kindling lights, place two large pieces of firewood alongside the kindling (or above the kindling if you are using a fireplace grate). When using a grate, place the larger log in front, so that as the wood breaks down it will fall backwards instead of forwards. One Match Fire - building it
  6. Add additional logs on top as required. You want to have some logs go directly over the burning kindling. You can build this up as high as you want (as long as you keep it a safe height).
  7. Sit back, relax, and feel proud of the fact that you started a fire with a single match.

That’s it! Starting a fire with a single match is quick and easy when you have the right ingredients. You can shop all of our fire starters or our premium firewood today. We deliver and ship our products all over the United States.

What is the Best-Smelling firewood?
October 7, 2018

A great fire should look beautiful, make you feel warm, and of course, it should smell amazing. If you’ve been around many fires, you’ve probably wondered why some smell great and others smell gross. When it comes to finding the best-smelling firewood, there are two primary factors: the type of wood and the condition of the wood. In this article, we will discuss both.

But first, what causes firewood to have any smell at all? As the combustion process breaks down the wood’s organic matter, it creates smoke. The composition of the smoke varies depending on the type and quality of the firewood being burned. The unique compounds within the smoke are responsible for its unique aroma.

The Quality of the Wood matters

We’ll explore the different types of wood soon, but it’s important to recognize that the quality of wood is often more important than the type of wood. If you attempt to burn green firewood or seasoned firewood that has a higher moisture content, the burn will have more smoke and it will not smell as nice.

Moisture is not the only problem, however, because seasoned wood is basically decomposing wood. It will likely have mold and fungus in it, and frankly, mold and fungus do not smell nice when they burn.

Here at Cutting Edge Firewood, we believe in only burning the best quality firewood available. We deliver wood to our customers that has been kiln dried and conditioned for 48 hours, reducing the moisture content of the wood to significantly lower levels than green or seasoned wood. This means our firewood is easier to light, burns longer and hotter, and of course, smells much better.

Cherry Firewood offers the most unique aroma

Our favorite firewood, from a best-smelling perspective, is undoubtedly cherry firewood. Cherry offers a unique aroma that is sweet and lasting. We’ve had customers tell us they created a fire with cherry firewood in their home, and then the home smelled great for two whole weeks!

If you really want to create a unique and memorable environment, then cherry firewood is the top choice. You’ll have visitors asking about it, and it’s an especially nice aroma during the holiday season. Not only that, but cherry firewood also looks great when you display it in a Cutting Edge Firewood rack.

Hickory provides the most classic smell

Hickory is our most popular firewood, and for good reason. The smell may not be as unique as cherry, but it is pure classic. There are a dozen different species of hickory native to the United States, all of which produce a fragrant aroma when burned. It’s difficult to describe the aroma of a hickory-burning fire without smelling it yourself (although some people we know compare it to fresh-baked ham). It’s sweet and savory, but subtle and not overbearing.

Not only does smell great, but hickory burns hotter and longer than most other firewoods. If you use hickory cooking wood or smoking chunks, they inject the same flavorful aroma into your food. You can use it to cook smoke or grill steaks, hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, fish and vegetables. The aromatic properties of hickory firewood compliment the flavors of most foods. As the flavorful smoke rises from the hickory fire, it creates more flavorful food.

Oak Firewood creates a more subtle fragrance

If you think the smell of hickory firewood is too strong, perhaps you should try oak. Oak is a popular alternative to hickory because it is milder and less sweet than hickory. Nonetheless, oak is a hardwood that’s easy to light, burns hot and produces a mild yet pleasing aroma.

Many people choose to mix and match their oak firewood with others. You can use oak as your base, and then throw on a couple pieces of cherry to add the unique cherry smell to your room or outdoor fire area. Oak is also a great cooking wood, and again, can be mixed and matched with other cooking woods for unique flavor combinations.

What about Softwoods like Cedar and Pine?

A lot of people ask about Cedar and Pine. Both types of wood smell great, especially when out in nature. They also smell nice when you burn them (supposing the wood is actually dry and not still filled with moisture and sap).

Both Western Red Cedar and Eastern Red Cedar are popular species in the United States. While they have unique characteristics, they both produce a similar fragrant aroma when burned. The aroma of cedar firewood is attributed to its natural oils. As cedar trees grow, they produce oils that repels pests and insects. These oils continue to have a fragrant aroma that’s released into the air when burned.

Likewise, pine firewood also can smell good when burned.

The problem with both cedar and pine, however, is that they are softwoods and not hardwoods (like cherry, oak, or hickory). This means that pine and cedar are both less dense and more porous than other types of firewood. They won’t burn efficiently, but they will burn quickly. With softwoods, you’ll be replenishing the fire pit or fireplace all night.

Not only that, but when cedar is burned, the natural oils quickly heat up and cause it to pop. For this reason, it’s recommended that you never burn cedar firewood indoors. In an outdoor area, its important to have a safe area with water nearby in case one of the embers pops and escapes the fire pit. Pine also has a high sap content, which can cause creosote to to accumulate in your chimney and create a tar-filled smoke when burning inside or outside.

For the reasons listed above, we do not recommend cedar or pine to people who want great fires. The extra smoke, risks, and work simply aren’t worth it when you have great options for amazing smelling firewood in Cherry, Hickory, and Oak.

Does the Aroma of Firewood Really Matter?

We’ve talked a lot about which firewood is the best-smelling. But does the smell really matter?

The short answer is this: It absolutely matters.

Would you rather eat food that smells great or smells terrible? Would you rather go on a date with someone who smells nice or someone who has a musky scent? So why would you want to have a fire, especially in your home, that doesn’t smell good?

Smell is the strongest sense tied to memory, and a great fire should always be a memorable experience. A great smelling fire can also ignite special memories from the past. Creating an enjoyable family gathering or a romantic moment will only be enhanced by the fireside, especially a non-smoky, nostalgic aromatic fire.

Studies have shown that aromatherapy — the treatment and/or prevention of medical conditions using fragrant aromas — can reduce stress and anxiety. Researchers believe that certain aromas trigger an internal response in the body, and the aroma of a wood-burning fire can protect against stress and anxiety.

Don’t forget, the aroma created by a cooking wood fire can affect the flavor of cooked meats and foods. If you’re planning to cook over a wood-burning fire, you’ll want to choose a great-smelling firewood to achieve the best possible flavor. The aromatic smoke will absorb into your food, thereby introducing rich new flavors that would otherwise not be possible.

When firewood produces a pleasant aroma, it simply creates a more enjoyable space. Whether you’re hosting a backyard party, camping underneath the stars or sparking up your patio fire pit, the aroma of a wood-burning fire will make these activities more enjoyable. Not only that, if you use quality kiln dried firewood, you won’t have that unfortunate smell that wet or seasoned firewood leaves on clothes.
