Fire that stays lit
March 4, 2020

Here at Cutting Edge Firewood, it’s no secret that we love a great fire. Something magical happens when we gather around the fireplace or fire pit and watch the flames dance. Fire has been a gathering place for thousands of years, so not only does it help us connect with those around us today, but it also helps connect us with our past.

But there is only one problem, what if you’ve gotten everyone together and your fire won’t stay lit?! What if you keep throwing matches and newspaper and twigs and get nothing but smoke and dying flames? How is it that a good flame can go bad when you add certain pieces of wood?

We have good news – You have come to the right place! We love fires and we know fires. In this article, we’ll explain how to maintain a great fire and ensure it stays lit the entire time. We highly recommend our video on maintaining a great fire below, or you can read on for more directions if that is your preference.

3 Things Every Good Fire Needs

If you want to enjoy a great fire, there are 3 elements that must be present to ensure your fire stays lit:

  1. Heat: There’s a reason you’ve never enjoyed a cold fire – there needs to be heat!
  2. Oxygen: Without air, your fire will be snuffed out
  3. Fuel: All that heat needs to burn something, and that something can be anything from (hopefully) firewood to (hopefully not) furniture

All three of these elements must be present. If your fire won’t stay lit, it’s probably because one of these three things is having trouble. As you might expect, all three of them affect one another, so it’s important to think about all them.

The Importance of Good Fuel Source

One of the most common challenges with starting a fire is having a bad fuel source. Firewood that is wet, decomposing, or moldy will never burn as well as kiln dried firewood. It makes sense when you think about it…

Water cools things down and reduces heat. There is a reason firefighters use it to put out fires! If you’re starting a fire with wet wood, it’s always going to be tough because the water will actively reduce the heat from the fire. Even if you place wet wood onto an existing fire, it is going to reduce the overall heat of the fire and could even put the fire out. If you want a great fire then, you should ensure you are only using dry wood.

Dry wood is also safer for your chimney. It reduces creosote build-up that can cause serious problems down the road. If you’re looking to warm your home, then again, dry firewood will burn hotter and create more heat!

Use hickory firewood to keep your fire lit

Many people use firewood that is “well-seasoned,” but one of the problems with seasoned firewood is that it is decomposing. This, by definition, means it will be less dense. Because the firewood is less dense, there is actually less fuel for the fire to burn away. If the seasoned wood is actually dry, it will be easier to light but it will burn more quickly.

Kiln Dried firewood is an awesome alternative to seasoned firewood. Not everyone follows the same kiln drying practices, however, so you have to be careful. Cutting Edge Firewood follows the most rigorous kiln drying standards. All of our wood is cooked at 250 degrees for 48 hours. This means it is incredibly dry and makes for an amazing fuel source.

Because we place freshly cut firewood into the kiln, it has not started decomposing. You know it will be dense and last for a longer amount of time. We also only use hardwoods like hickory firewood, which is more dense and will therefore burn for much longer than soft woods like pine.

How to Maintain Oxygen Flow

Wherever you build your fire, you’ll need good oxygen flow. In order to do this, you need to think about how you stack the firewood.

If you cover the flame with too much firewood too quickly, you can snuff it out because it won’t get enough oxygen. You also need to stack the logs in such a way that enables them to breathe. If the logs are stacked too tightly together, oxygen won’t flow between them and it will slow the burning process significantly.

Keep your fire lit with good oxygen flow

If you’re outside, then things like leaves may seem like an easy fire starter, but again they can quickly reduce or eliminate all oxygen flow. It’s best to avoid them unless you like lots of smoke!

It’s always a good idea to start with smaller pieces of wood. It’s easy for them to receive oxygen and start building heat, and then you can strategically stack or set larger pieces of wood on top to provide more fuel when required.

As you add firewood to the fire throughout the day or night, keep oxygen flow in mind. Don’t add too much wood at once or place them in the fire directly next to each other or they will struggle to burn properly. Always stack neatly, so that oxygen can flow but heat can still be shared.

Keep the Heat Alive

The final component is heat! Have you ever noticed what happens to a piece of firewood that falls away from the fire? It usually just stops burning, right?

That’s because the wood needs to be close to the heat source in order to burn. The further from the heat source, the cooler the air and the quicker your fire will go out.

Keep fire lit by keeping firewood together

As you set up the fire, it’s important to keep this balance in mind. While it’s important to maintain oxygen flow, you still want the wood to be close enough to share heat. One or Two inches of space is usually a pretty good balance – it allows both oxygen to flow and heat to be shared.

As the fire burns, you might need to use a designer fire iron to move pieces of firewood closer to the middle. Often times, the firewood burns away in the middle of the log, but the sides remain untouched. As the firewood collapses, take a moment to push pieces closer into the fire. This will extend the life of your fire and reduce the amount of wood you need to add.

Lastly, when it comes to heat, you really want a good coal bed. The coals are the best source of heat in the fire and will make it so much easier for the wood to stay hot and burning. If your fire won’t stay lit for very long, check it make sure you have enough wood at the bottom to create a good coal base.

Keep fire lit with an awesome coal base

There is something special about starting a fire with a single match. Not only does it make life easy, but it also tends to invoke a certain sense of pride.

On the flip side, it’s fairly infuriating when you go through dozens of matches or an entire supply of lighter fluid attempting to get a fire started. This process usually involves lots of smoke inhalation, frustration, and possibly a few four letter words (and unfortunately, we don’t mean “fire”).

But we’re here to help! Cutting Edge Firewood has mastered the art of starting a fire with a single match. Watch this short video to see our process, or scroll down for some written directions.

What you need:

In order to start a fire with a single match, you’ll need a few key supplies:

  • Dry Firewood: This is the most important part of a single match fire. Wet wood simply does not want to ignite. You can force it to light withenough heat, blowing, smoke, and persistence, but certainly not with a single match. This is one of the many reasons Cutting Edge Firewood is the best – we use the most rigorous drying process in the industry.everything that you need to start a fire
  • Fire Starter: There are a lot of different fire starters on the market, but basically you want something that will light and then stay lit for several minutes. Naturally, we recommend our excelsior fire starters because they are scent and chemical free. This makes them safer for both indoor fires and cooking fires. And of course, they are very easy to light and will last a long time.
  • Heart Pine: A nice way to complement your fire starter is with a piece of heart pine. Heart pine is derived from the heartwood of pine trees and burns readily even when wet, making it a prized natural fire starter. The pleasant aroma of pine will add a welcome addition to your fire. We don’t recommend using them with cooking wood, because heart pine does not add great flavor.
  • Kindling: Smaller pieces of wood ignite more easily than larger pieces. You can gather lots of small twigs from your yard, cut off smaller pieces from a log, or you can use the kindling we supply at Cutting Edge. Each of our kindling pieces are made with the same quality as our firewood and is easy to light. If you use our kindling, two pieces will be plenty. If you use other kindling, you’ll likely need many more pieces.
  • Matches: If you want to start a single match fire, then you’ll obviously need some matches!

Each of the items listed above are available from Cutting Edge Firewood. You can purchase them separately, or for extra convenience you can choose the complete fire starter package.

What you don’t need:

Many people are under the impression that a single match fire requires the following, but we’re here to tell you the truth. The following “fire starters” are not necessary and can negatively affect your fire starting experience.

  • Lighter Fluid: We’ve known friends who seem to think a good fire is one where you spray lighter fluid at the fire whenever the fire gets too low. The problem is, they’re burning fluid instead of wood. They’ve chosen to use wet wood and are trying to make up for it with lighter fluid. This adds unnecessary chemicals to your fire, does not smell good, requires more work, and creates additional danger.
  • Newspaper: Most people have used newspaper to start a fire before. It certainly ignites easily, but it does have several disadvantages. First, it cannot stay lit for very long and often burns out before the kindling ignites. Second, it doesn’t burn as hot as a good fire starter. Third, it creates lots of unnecessary ash that often floats up and out of the fire. Lastly, in today’s digital age it’s much harder to find newspaper! For a more reliable experience, choose an actual fire starter.
  • Gasoline: This is an absolute NO. Using gasoline is extremely dangerous. The fumes spread immediately and lighting it is explosive. We know people who tried to use gasoline and they ended in the hospital. If that’s not enough reason, gasoline isn’t even an effective fire starter because it burns so quickly. So once again, never use gasoline to start a fire.

Step-By-Step Guide to Starting a Fire with one Match

If you watched the video, you saw how easy it is to start a fire the Cutting Edge way. Remember to always keep safety in mind when you start a fire and choose an appropriate place to start one.

Here are step-by-step instructions for lighting a fire with a single match:

  1. Place the excelsior fire starter (or the fire starter of your choice) at the center of the where you want the fire. If using a fireplace grate, then place this below the grate.
  2. Strike your single match and light the fire starter.
  3. If you’re using heart pine, carefully rest a single heart pine piece on top of the lit fire starter. How to start a fire: adding heart pine
  4. Place a couple pieces of kindling directly above the heart pine in the shape of an X. Use additional kindling if required.
  5. As the kindling lights, place two large pieces of firewood alongside the kindling (or above the kindling if you are using a fireplace grate). When using a grate, place the larger log in front, so that as the wood breaks down it will fall backwards instead of forwards. One Match Fire - building it
  6. Add additional logs on top as required. You want to have some logs go directly over the burning kindling. You can build this up as high as you want (as long as you keep it a safe height).
  7. Sit back, relax, and feel proud of the fact that you started a fire with a single match.
