Why Hickory Firewood?

Hickory is the most premium and the most popular species of firewood we offer. This heavy and dense hardwood is easy to light and is considered ideal for burning and cooking.

Not only does hickey firewood burn hotter, brighter, and longer than other species of wood, but it also produces exceptionally low smoke emissions. This makes hickory firewood safe to enjoy indoors and outdoors.

Fire enthusiasts love using hickory in their fireplace or firepit because of its pleasant aroma and inviting crackle. Both of which are guaranteed to create an exceptional fireside experience.

Something to Consider Before You Buy Hickory Firewood

While hickory firewood might be easier to find than some other species like cherry firewood, finding high-quality firewood can be a bit of a challenge. Most hickory firewood that has been “seasoned” ends up with a considerable amount of rot, mold, fungus, and pests due to the process of leaving wood outside to dry for a minimum of twelve months. In fact, Hickory is one of the fastest rotting woods, when left outside.

At Cutting Edge Firewood, we only sell Cutting Edge Kiln Dried Artisanal Hickory Firewood that is properly dried leaving it free of insects, mold, and excess moisture. This is why our exclusive artisanal hickory firewood lights easier and burns cleaner.

To make your fire last even longer, our hickory firewood pairs exceptionally well with our Extended Burn Hickory and Uncut Rounds. Just make sure your fire is burning hot enough before you add any of our extended burn products.

Where Does Hickory Firewood Come From?

Hickory trees are large trees with plenty of foliage that creates a canopy effect. These trees belong to the walnut family and are of the Carya genus.

There are eighteen species of hickory trees but only twelve of them are actually native to North America. The most common are shagbark hickory and shellbark hickory.

You can easily identify hickory by the rough textured bark with a mix of shallow and deep ridges. The bark is generally gray but darkens as the tree matures.

How Does Hickory Firewood Compare to Other Firewoods?

Each type of firewood presents unique traits that influence the burning experience. Hickory wood is a favorite among fire enthusiasts for its dense wood structure, leading to a hotter, longer burn time. When used as a cooking wood, it's an excellent choice for those seeking an authentic, smoky aroma reminiscent of traditional BBQ without an overpowering smoke flavor.

Hickory's burn properties are comparable to those of oak firewood, particularly red oak, known for its long burning time and high heat output. While hickory exudes a potent, smoky aroma reminiscent of traditional BBQ, oak offers a subtler scent, lending a tranquil ambiance to your fireside gatherings.

Cherry firewood, in contrast, doesn't quite match hickory's burn time and heat production. Instead, it distinguishes itself with a milder, sweeter aroma, adding a unique sensory dimension to the fire experience.

Hickory is one of the densest types of wood, giving it an edge over cherry for heating purposes, whether in a fireplace or a wood stove. This density also means a longer drying time, but at Cutting Edge, we ensure that each handpicked piece of wood undergoes a vigorous drying process to reduce creosote build-up and provide a cleaner burn in your fireplace or pit.

How Should You Store Your Firewood?

The method of storage for good firewood is imperative to maintaining its quality and ensuring a good fire. The key is to keep the firewood dry, elevated, and well-ventilated.

Our Cutting Edge Firewood comes in specially designed boxes that are perfect for storage. The boxes allow for adequate ventilation, ensuring your firewood remains dry and ready to burn when you need it. If you prefer, our firewood can also be stored in our sleek firewood racks, either indoors or outdoors.

If you're storing your firewood outdoors, make sure it is elevated off the ground, ideally on a rack, to prevent moisture absorption from the ground. Our fire rack canvas covers keep the top of the wood protected from rain and snow but leave the sides open for ventilation.

Remember, the best woods for fire are those that are thoroughly dried and properly stored. With Cutting Edge Firewood, you can trust that you're getting the highest quality artisanal firewood, expertly processed and ready to create unforgettable firelit experiences.
