A Successful Memorial Day Weekend Firepit: How to Start Your Summer Off Right

The unofficial start to summer is almost here: Memorial Day Weekend is only a few days away! There’s no better way to start the season off right than to spend an evening (or two!) around the firepit. By hosting a successful get-together around the firepit this weekend, you can set a positive precedent for the rest of the summer, ensuring that your family and friends will be eager to make firepit get-togethers a regular occurrence in the coming months. However, if you haven’t hosted a night around the firepit since the end of last summer--or if this is your first time with a new firepit!--you might be concerned about something going wrong. The following tips can help ensure that your Memorial Day Weekend goes smoothly and that your summer starts exactly the way you want it to!

Tip 1: Make sure you have the kiln-dried firewood you need when the weekend arrives.

Like every holiday, Memorial Day Weekend can creep up on you fast, leaving you without the kiln-dried firewood you need in advance of your fireside get-together. However, that doesn’t mean you have to cancel your event. Cutting Edge Firewood offers multiple convenient ways for you to get the firewood you need in the next few days. If you’re a repeat customer and we’re already familiar with dropping firewood off at your home, you don’t even need to be there! You can simply schedule a delivery time during the day, and when you come home from work, the firewood will be right where we always stack it. Alternatively, if you’re really crunched for time before Memorial Day Weekend, you can come straight to our Showroom and pick up the firewood you need.

In order to ensure you have what you need for your event, you also have to store your kiln-dried firewood properly. After all, in the minutes before your guests arrive, you don’t want to find that your wood is damp, pest-infested, or moldy. Whether you decide to store your kiln-dried firewood indoors or outdoors, make sure that it is well-protected from water. That way, it will be in perfect shape when you are ready to use it.

Tip 2: Refresh your knowledge on how to start a fire in your firepit.

Considering the fact that it’s been months since the last time you lit your firepit, you might not be feeling confident about your abilities. The first fire of the season always presents a challenge, and you don’t want to run into trouble that disrupts your Memorial Day Weekend get-together. If you feel like you need an assisted practice run, our Delivery Artisans are here to help. When we deliver your firewood, we can help you start your first fire so that you won’t have any trouble when the weekend arrives. You may also want to consider choosing kiln-dried hickory as your firewood, since it’s the easiest type of wood to light.

Tip 3: Consider the timing of your get-together when choosing your firewood.

What time are your friends coming over for your Memorial Day Weekend event? How long do you think they will stay? Are you planning to have the fire burning throughout the evening, or will you be keeping the fireside portion of the event shorter, after packing in a full day of fun? These are important questions to ask yourself when choosing your firewood. Oak has a moderately long burn time, while hickory firewood offers a more extended burn. If you’re looking for a really long burn time, you may want to consider oversized hickory or even uncut rounds. Oversized hickory burns twice as long as regular kiln-dried hickory, and uncut rounds burn about three times as long--approximately two to five hours per log. Depending on the length of your Memorial Day Weekend event, you can gauge which option best meets your needs.

Tip 4: Choose the best-smelling kiln-dried firewood you can.

This Memorial Day Weekend, you want to make a good impression on your friends and family at your fireside gathering. That way, they’ll be excited to join you by the firepit for the rest of the summer! One of the ways to impress your guests and encourage them to come back for more is to make sure the smoke from your firepit has a pleasant aroma. Nothing says “summer” like the sweet smell of smoke from burning hickory in the backyard. Oak is also a good option. N matter what, you definitely want to steer clear of store-bought wood or seasoned firewood, which give off bad-smelling smoke that will irritate your guests during your Memorial Day Weekend event and cling to their clothes long after they leave.
